It's not as easy as taking it to the press or pushing for a reform in the way it might be for the West. Being partly Japanese myself, they have a very rigid and autonomous system where "stepping out of place" is largely looked down upon. And I do absolutely agree that there was a multitude of things he could have done other than murder.īut in all this, you really have to keep in mind that this is Japan. Kuwana's motives were pure at first, even if completely deranged and wrong. There was no way that Mikoshiba would ever be brought to justice just like the way Kawai never was.

However, I think it's important to note that the original circumstances were enough to drive him to that. Yes, no matter what, I can't condone Kuwana for murdering people because that's a line that should never be crossed. Hey, thanks for the response! Definitely looked forward to some dissenting opinions! It really shows how great Kuwana was written. All Kuwana's doing is accepting blame and just sitting on this blame while dragging others into a very subjective take on how justice should be carried out. Taking responsibility means actually doing something to improve the situation for oneself and others. Kuwana is a great character with a huge amount of depth. Except that Eri-chan was killed by a properly insane person and Yagami carries no responsibility for that whatsoever. "Hoo, dude, your actions also got a girl killed!". For this reason, I utterly disliked him mentioning Eri-chan as some sort of 'gotcha' to Yagami in Chapter 9. Sure, but it was Kuwana who gave the initial push. If he's so damaged, why doesn't he try to actually change his ways? Reiko-san? "It's her responsibility since she killed the guy". Sawa-sensei? "Oh no, I'm so damaged about it".

In addition, Kuwana utterly fails to take responsibility several times throughout the story. It's just a very perverse version of justice which, honestly, feels very barbaric. It's not helping people to actually change laws to represent bullying victims better. It's not this ultimate deterrent against future bullying. Killing bullies carries no purpose whatsoever besides stroking Kuwana's ego. At least there was a clear purpose even if it was incredibly uncivilised. I honestly struggled to understand what Kuwana was hoping to accomplish besides his stunt with Ehara. Not to speak that before Yagami's intervention, Kuwana's crimes were not made public and there was absolutely no public message. I mean, it's kinda hard to imagine a bully who's going to stop bullying just because there's this urban legend about a guy killing bullies (I'm saying this as a former victim of bullying). Instead, Kuwana, so to speak, goes for the easy way out by killing people, which ultimately accomplishes absolutely nothing. Which is essentially a perverse version of the victim complex. Instead, Kuwana just goes for the "woe is me, I'm so tormented" type. Taking responsibility within the confines of a civilised society, in my opinion, would be going with his story to the press, admitting his wrongdoing, pushing for a country-wide school reform, etc. To elaborate, Kuwana carries a heavy responsibility for failing to take action against the bullying of Mitsuru Kusumoto. Yagami is 100% in the right to want to stop the guy.
